A word about becoming Chair of BASBWE

I am honoured to become Chair of BASBWE (British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles). I take on this role with both optimism and concern – optimism for the potential of wind music in the UK, and concern for the broader challenges facing music and music education today.

It would be a disservice not to recognise the difficult reality confronting musicians and the wider music industry at present. Yet, I remain committed – and hopeful – that together we can find ways to address these challenges and champion the promotion and enjoyment of wind music.

The United Kingdom has a distinguished history of artistic and musical achievement across genres and media. In particular, our military tradition has left us with a legacy of wind music to be proud of. Today, there are over 500 wind orchestras and ensembles across the country, the majority of them amateur groups.

BASBWE’s mission now is to ask: what is most needed in this moment, and how can we best support those 500 ensembles? I believe deeply in the power of community – not only in the joy of making music together, but in what can be achieved when people unite behind a shared goal. My own crowdfunding initiatives have shown me what is possible when passion meets action.

We may not have the largest resources available, but we will make the most of what we do have – to stand with, strengthen, and celebrate those who keep this music alive.
